In the large guard room of their container block, Clemmy, Timmy, and Heike were busy collecting information.

The door to Hansen’s office opened, and he stood there, filling the door frame.

“Aren’t you done working for the day?” he grumbled.

All three of them made dismissive gestures.

“Two hours ago.”

“Go home. Tomorrow is another day!”

“But she wanted results and…”

Hansen interrupted Heike.

“Leave it on the desk. I’ll deal with it.”

While Clemmy and Timmy hurried to get out of there, Heike remained at her desk.

“The tourists are going crazy today. We barely manage to keep up and it’s all just childish things, but it costs time. I can collect some overtime with this!”

“Summer’s just ahead of us, Röder. You’ll have overtime enough then. Are you sure?”

She nodded.

Bente came in, looking around in confusion.

“Where did they –?”

That’s all she managed.

“I sent them home!”

“I had—”

Once again, Hansen interrupted her.

“Listen, Brodersen. I know you’re doing your best, but our colleagues have to manage their everyday lives as well that’s happening on an island like this. It may not be about murder and manslaughter, but it is still important!”

Bente swallowed the rude answer that was on the tip of her tongue already.

“You found a kindred spirit in Heike who’s willing to do overtime. The others have families!”

“So did I!” Bente returned, irritated.

“I don’t want to fight you, Brodersen, but it’s just a missing person so far. That doesn’t justify overtime.”

Old Hansen didn’t give her time to respond.

“The island is full of tourists. We have beach theft, some cars broken open, and dozens of people coming in here because they lost some thing or another. I have traffic accidents, injured seals on the beach, and any number of city people stomping through the dunes as if they’d never heard of coastal protection at all.”

“That’s also part of our tasks?”

“Brodersen, come Monday you will be managing the SYLT POLICE STATION. We take care of every bit of chickenshit! We have recorded the missing person report and the colleagues are keeping their eyes open. That has to be enough!”

“What about the bloody cardigan?” Bente asked aggressively.

“That’s why Heike is helping you out.”

She glanced at Heike, who gave a brave smile, and turned back to Hansen. She was seething.

“You know that I can contact the LKA?”

“Right, Brodersen. I suspect you applied for this job because you were just about to burn out. Is that right? Slow down and take it a bit easier.”

Bente said nothing. He’d hit gold. Of course. After all, he’d been doing this job twice as long as she had, and he was able to draw his conclusions.

“We’re on the same side, Brodersen!”

“Are we?”

“Yes, fuck it!”

“But we have plenty of clues!”

Bente didn’t want to wait until the weekend was over. She had a bad feeling about this.

“It’s all not quite enough!” Hansen muttered.

“Anything that happens is going to be on your head.” She said it calmly, but it sounded like a threat.

“Your theory says that something has already happened, doesn’t it?”

She was incredibly angry about his stubbornness, but she had to comply.
